How Many Caesareans Is It Safe To Have?

I receive hundreds of emails each month, and a majority are focused on the safety of more than one or two Caesareans. The question is a difficult one to answer, as there are many variables that are key to the safety of repeat Caesareans.

There have been many women who have had three, four, even five repeat Caesarean Sections. Each Caesarean has been uneventful, and both baby and mother have come through perfectly fine. However, more than two Caesareans isn't necessarily considered safe for every woman. The type of incision, scar tissue, and the events surrounding the previous Caesareans may mean more risk for some women.

All Caesareans, carry risks to both mother and baby. The risk of blood loss, chance of infection, and injury from the operation. This holds true for a first Caesarean Section, or a repeat. A Caesarean Section is a major operation, and should be viewed a such.

Scar tissue also plays a vital role in the success of a repeat Caesarean. With each Caesarean performed, scar tissue builds. The more Caesareans that are performed, the more difficult the procedure can be each time.

The most important thing a woman can do is to consult with her doctor about her desire to get pregnant, and her desire to deliver via repeat Caesarean Section. The doctor can best tell whether a repeat Caesarean can be performed.
