Common Caesarean Questions & Their Answers Will I feel the Caesarean being performed? No. While this is a common fear, the chances of actually feeling the operation are very slim. An Epidural or Spinal are given before the operation begins, numbing the body from the waist down. You may feel some slight tugging and pressure, but that is all. Will the Epidural or Spinal hurt? In most instances, the Epidural or Spinal isn't painful. This isn't to say that it can't be uncomfortable. The most common discomforts experienced are the initial shot given to numb the area and the pressure felt when the catheter is inserted. What If I do start to feel them performing the operation? If by chance you do begin feeling them make their incisions, let them know immediately. If this occurs, you may be placed under general anaesthesia. How long will the Caesarean take? In most cases, the operation itself takes 30-45 minutes. This is from the time the first incision is made until the incision is closed up. If complications arise, then the procedure may take longer. Can my spouse or partner be in the operating room with me? Most hospitals allow the spouse or partner to be in the operating room. If complications arise, the spouse or partner may be asked to leave, but this depends solely on the hospitals policies. Will I have to be strapped down during the Caesarean? While the practice of strapping the patient's arms to the table is rarely performed, there are some hospitals that still do this. If you are concerned, ask your doctor about your hospital's policies concerning this. Will I be able to see them performing the Caesarean? No. Before the operation begins, a drape will be placed at your chest, blocking your view of the operation. Can I have my spouse or partner take photos of the operation and of the baby after it is born? This depends on the hospital's policies regarding this matter. Some hospitals allow photos to be taken both during and after the Caesarean while some will only allow photos to be taken of the baby after the operation is performed. What type of sutures will be used to close my incision? The incision made to the uterus is closed with sutures that dissolve. The outer incision is usually closed with staples, or sutures that need to be removed after the incision has healed. How long will recovering from the Caesarean take? A recovery period varies from person to person. For some women, recovery takes only a matter of a few weeks, while for others it can take as long as three to four months, if not longer. There are steps that can be taken to help speed the recovery along. Getting out of bed and walking within 24 hours after the Caesarean is an essential step to recovery, and can help the recovery process. When will my sutures or staples be removed? Only the sutures/staples made to the outer incision will need to be removed. Some doctors will do it before you leave the hospital, while others wait one week before removal. How long will I have to stay in the hospital? Most hospitals require a four to five day stay after a Caesarean. However, if the recovery process is going well, you are passing gas and eating solid foods, you may be able to leave as early as three days after the operation. How painful is the recovery process after a Caesarean? This, just like the recovery time, varies from woman to woman. Some women experience some pain and discomfort, while others experience a lot. If you labored for many hours before a Caesarean was performed, you may find that you experience a lot of pain and discomfort after the Caesarean whereas someone who had a planned Caesarean, experiences less. Can I breastfeed after a Caesarean? Absolutely! While it may be tricky to find a breastfeeding position that is comfortable due to your incision, breastfeeding is not only possible but encouraged!
